As the West continues to enforce sanctions on Russia over the Kremlin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, Italian authorities are presently investigating the a $700 million super yacht which sources believe could possible belong to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the ship’s captain, Guy Bennett-Pearce, Italian investigators boarded the 459-foot vessel named ‘The Scheherazade’ at the Italian port of Marina di Carrara and demanded proof of ownership.

"They are looking hard. They are looking at every aspect,” Bennett-Pearce told the New York Times.

Although the British national would not reveal the owner of the yacht – whose crew is mostly Russian -- he was forced to surrender documents which revealed the identity of the yacht’s owner to Italian authorities.

The Italian investigation comes just days after several Western countries began moving to seize the assets of Russian oligarchs connected to Putin – including luxury yachts captured in French and German ports.

Reporting from the Times revealed that the investigation was led by Italian financial police and that The Scheherazade was named for the symphonic work by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

For the past two summers, the luxury yacht is believed to sailed to Sochi, where Putin is rumored to own a luxury mansion designed by famed Russian architect Roman Vlasov.
