A gunman opened fire in a Toronto-area condo on Sunday, killing five of his neighbors before being fatally shot by police officers.

The shooter was identified as 73-year-old Francesco Villi, a longtime resident of the building who had sued the condo’s board several times, claiming that the building’s electrical room was making him sick.

Villi had allegedly spent years harassing his neighbors and threatening the condo’s board. In 2019, the condo board filed for a restraining order against him after he allegedly harassed other residents. Last year, he was found in contempt of court for failing to harass residents.

Villi used a semi-automatic handgun to carry out the killing of his neighbors. Soon after police arrived at the building, they confronted Villi in a hallway. One of the police officers shot and killed the suspect.

"Horrendous scene," York Regional Police Chief James MacSween said of the crime, according to the Associated Press. "Six deceased. One of them is the subject. The other five are victims."

Three men and two women were killed in the incident. In addition to the five victims, one other person was shot by the suspect. The seventh victim, a 66-year-old, is being treated in the hospital and is expected to survive.

“Three victims were members of the condominium board,” said MacSween. “Obviously that will be investigated thoroughly,” adding it was “hard to say” if the victims were targeted.

"I am absolutely shocked and heartbroken that five individuals have lost their lives … and for this to happen in a community like Vaughan … is devastating," Vaughan Mayor Steven Del Duca said in front of the crime scene Monday. "It’s just horrifying, and I can’t imagine what the victims' families are going through right now."

The rest of the residents of the building were evacuated after the incident. They are expected to be able to return to their units when the police announce that there is no further threat.
