Antarctica’s Port Lockroy post office, known as the “Penguin Post Office,” is looking for a new team member to sort mail, sell post stamps, and count penguins.
“We are seeking an inspirational, strong, and determined team leader to spend up to five months (November – March) managing a team of 4-5 people who will be living and working at Port Lockroy in Antarctica running the seasonal operation of the site,” reads the job application.
The Penguin Post Office is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Antarctica, receiving around 18,000 visitors every season. The visitors usually come to visit Goudier Island’s main residents: penguins.
The post office in the British Antarctic territory was part of a research station established in 1944. Currently, the post office is operated by the U.K. Antarctic Heritage Trust (AKAHT), which has included the new additions of a museum and a gift shop.
The Penguin Post Office sends around 70,000 cards every year to more than 100 countries, according to ABC News 7.
To help preserve the environment, the UKAHT conducts a study on the impact of visitors to the island. Part of the study involved counting penguins and informing visitors about the island’s guidelines.
Despite being able to live with Penguins, the job posting has its downsides. “We have no running water on the island, so washing facilities are very basic. Water is collected in jerry cans from visiting ships,” reads the application packet.
Other hardships include no showers and no flushing toilets. Power is limited, but the camp has plenty of batteries charged by solar panels. The phone signal is limited and there is no internet connection. Any communication is through satellite.
“Antarctica is a physically and mentally challenging place to work,” the package adds.
The application closes at 11:59 p.m. on Monday.
