A Miami-Dade police officer died three days after being shot in the head while confronting an armed robbery suspect.

Cesar "Echy" Echaverry, 29, was a five-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Miami Dade Police Director Alfredo Ramirez announced his passing Wednesday night on his Twitter page, saying, "It is with great sadness and great regret that we announce the untimely passing of Officer Cesar "Echy" Echaverry. Surrounded by his loved ones, Echy succumbed to his injuries after a brief battle for his life."

Echaverry was critically wounded in Monday night's shooting, which began with an armed robbery in Broward and ended with a chase and gunfire that left suspect Jeremy Horton dead, Miami-Dade police officials said.

Echaverry was a member of the Miami-Dade Police Robbery Intervention Department, a squad that works in crime-prone areas and often encounters dangerous suspects.

A second suspect was identified today in connection with the armed robbery that killed Echaverry, and was shot by police on Tuesday.

The referenced media source is missing and needs to be re-embedded.

His girlfriend identified him as Jamie Robles, a man of Puerto Rican descent, nicknamed Rico. Robles was shot and killed by officers in Miami Springs at an Extended Stay Hotel, where he lived with his girlfriend and three children.

Police said that when they entered Robles' room, they found him armed with a rifle, and an exchange of gunfire ensued in which the suspect was killed.

Robles' girlfriend denied that he was involved in the armed robbery.
