Venezuelan opposition member and former 3-time political prisoner, Gilber Caro, was arrested and accused of leaving the scene of a car accident that left a man dead and a woman injured in Miami this Monday.

The incident took place shortly after 3:30 a.m., when the City of Miami Fire Rescue responded to an emergency call about a 29-year-old man without vital signs and an injured woman who was driving one of the vehicles involved.

The woman was taken to Coral Gables Hospital, where she is in stable condition.

Police later confirmed that they had arrested a man who turned out to be Gilber Caro, a Venezuelan leader and three-time political prisoner, who is now facing charges after being accused of leaving the scene of a fatal traffic accident.

According to the arrest report, Caro was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe westbound on 8th Street, approaching SW 42nd Avenue, when a second man, driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, ran the red light, causing the collision between both vehicles.

After the impact, the driver of the Hyundai died after colliding with a third car and a palm tree. In the middle of the accident, Caro fled the scene on foot.

The Venezuelan politician did not render aid or call emergencies before leaving the scene, as mentioned in his arrest report.

Later, at 7:00 a.m., Caro contacted the registered owner of the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving to confirm that he was involved in an accident. He was finally arrested at 9:20 a.m.

The Venezuelan party Voluntad Popular spoke out about the incident through its social networks and confirmed Caro's involvement in the accident and his subsequent arrest.

“We have been informed that Gilber Caro, former political prisoner and deputy elected in 2015, was involved in a traffic accident in the last few hours in the United States and is in the custody of the authorities of that country,” the party published, while adding they were waiting for more information.
