Miami-Dade police officers are investigating a shooting early Monday morning that left at least one person dead in a hallway of a residential building in southwest Miami-Dade County.

The incident occurred at 30100 Old Dixie Highway. The shooting was allegedly committed in front of the victim's son, according to a witness account cited by Telemundo 51.

Police responded to an emergency call reporting a person shot. Upon arrival at the scene, units found an adult male with a gunshot wound. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

In addition to this shooting, several violent gun incidents occurred in the county over the weekend.

On Saturday, President Joe Biden signed a historic bill on gun regulation in the United States.

This legislation seemed unimaginable until a series of mass shootings occurred in the country, including the massacre at Uvalde Elementary School in Texas, where an 18-year-old killed 19 students and two teachers.

The bill will require enhanced background checks for younger gun buyers, keep guns out of the hands of felons accused of domestic violence, and help states implement laws that make it easier for authorities to take guns away from people deemed dangerous.

Part of its $13 billion cost will also help strengthen mental health programs and school safety.
