Newly elected Latina Republican Anna Paulina Luna took to Twitter yesterday to chronicle her first couple days on the job in the corridors of Congress, and they weren’t pretty.
According to the Mexican-American native Californian, after only a couple of days in her new role representing the 13th Congressional District of Florida, the 33-year old was “sexually harassed” by a Daily Beast reporter who followed her through the corridors of the U.S. Capitol complex.
“When you’re a woman who stands up to the swamp, you are sexually harassed leaving your office, accused of having sex with members, being a witch, and more lies,” Luna tweeted, a social media post which included a self-recorded video depicting Daily Beast reporter Zachary Petrizzo asking her interview questions.
“This is why we must drain the swamp,” Luna declared. “This is not journalism. Is this how female reps are treated?” she asked.
Luna’s video, which has been viewed more than 1.2 million times on Twitter, shows the reporter asking the newly elected Latina Representative questions as he followed her through the Capitol complex and out onto the streets of Washington, D.C.
In the video, Petrizzo, asked Luna if she was really “a witch.” That question stemmed from a previous allegation made by one of Luna’s past rivals during her congressional race.
The Daily Beast reportedly found out about the allegation after obtaining a copy of a letter her lawyers at the law firm Holland & Knight sent to Matt Tito, who reportedly considered a primary challenge to Luna, and made a bizarre series of accusations against her during a radio talk show.
The video also documented the Daily Beast journalist interrogating Luna about “some sort of relationship with a representative,” pushing her for a comment about unfounded allegations Tito made about Luna having relations with another Florida GOP representative.
“Luna maintained composure throughout the video and refused to acknowledge Petrizzo's questions,” FOX News reported.
Luna, who served in the U.S. Air Force already denied those allegations in a prior exchange with the Daily Beast, purportedly making the interview questions potentially redundant and unnecessary.
Luna is one of 20 Republicans, and the only new Hispanic member of the GOP to vote against electing Rep. Kevin McCarthy speaker.
She voted for Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan in the first three rounds and Florida Rep. Byron Donalds in the last three.
