A University of Florida medical student is being accused of stabbing his mother to death this Saturday.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a news conference that Emmanuel Espinoza, 21, asked his mother Elvia if he could stay at her home in the town of Frostproof because there was a family event this weekend, so she agreed.

“When Espinoza arrived at his mother's house around 2:00 p.m., she opened the door for him and he began stabbing her many times. He fled," Judd said.

As soon as he murdered her, Espinoza dialed 911 and immediately confessed to the operators what had happened.

Police interviewed the suspect, who said he had wanted to kill his mother for many years because she “made him nervous,” Judd said during the news conference.

Espinoza was charged with first-degree murder.

Elvia, 46, was a second-grade teacher at Ben Hill Griffin Elementary School in Frostproof.

“It's a very sad day with a cruel and inexplicable murder,” Judd said.
