Florida man arrested after murdering mother and burning down her home

A 32-year-old Colorado man was arrested in the Florida Keys after being charged with murdering his mother last week

A 32-year-old Colorado man named Matthew Harless Buchanan was arrested by deputies from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in the Florida Keys after being charged with murdering his mother last week.

According to police records, Buchanan was captured early on Tuesday morning at a gas station on Plantation Key. Police began their search after he was accused of murdering his mother, 59-year-old Elizabeth Bjorlow in Castle Rock, Colorado. Colorado authorities have stated that the victim’s body was found among the ruins of a burned-down house.

After being apprehended by law enforcement officers, Buchanan was transported to the Monroe County Jail, from where he will be extradited to Colorado, where he stands charged with one count of murder and another count of arson.

In a statement, Castle Rock police said they hoped Buchanan's capture would bring relief to the community.

A 50-year-old Daytona Beach woman who was accompanying the alleged killer was arrested and later released.
