A Florida bill restricting how employers can implement COVID-19 vaccine mandates passed the state legislature Wednesday and now heads to the desk of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Florida's Senate approved the bill along party lines in a 24-14 vote, following a House vote earlier in the day.

The new law would prohibit schools, local governments and businesses from enforcing a vaccine mandate, but employers could enact mandates if they create medical and religious exemptions for employees.

According to local station WTSP, large companies could face a fine of up to $5,000 if they don't comply with the new law, while smaller businesses would be charged $10,000.

Once signed, the bill would remain in effect until June 2023.
