The FBI is investigating the death of a woman onboard a Carnival cruise ship after calling the circumstances “suspicious.”

The unresponsive female passenger was found onboard Carnival’s Sunshine cruise traveling from Charleston, South Carolina to Nassau Bahamas on February 27, the FBI Columbia field office said in a news release.

Even though the medical staff and crew tried to aid the woman by providing life-saving measures, she was pronounced dead onboard the ship, the news release added.

When the ship returned to Charleston, FBI officials investigating the case searched the woman’s room for any evidence indicating that the death could have been a “crime on the high seas.”

Officials have not disclosed the identity of the passenger or the cause of death since the case is still under investigation.

Carnival cruises said they are cooperating with the investigation that is being handled by authorities in Charleston and the Bahamas.

"Both the deceased and her husband were debarked in Nassau and Bahamian authorities have already investigated the circumstances and are conducting an autopsy," said Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson Matt Lupoli in a statement.

“We are fully cooperating. This is a matter for authorities in the Bahamas and Charleston and we have no further comments,” said Lupoli.

The incident was isolated and did not pose a threat to other passengers, the FBI said.
