A raging tornado touched down in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on Saturday afternoon, causing widespread damage in some neighborhoods and prompting residents to seek shelter in other areas.

The storm caused trees to collapse and vehicles to overturn in the Sanctuary Cove neighborhood, in nearby North Palm Beach. Some houses were also destroyed by branches that flew dangerously in the wind.

The National Weather Service in Miami said the tornado struck near Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center with winds of 100 mph (160 kph) and headed northeast toward the coast.

Damage from the storm forced city authorities to close major roads while workers cleared away debris and inspected the wreckage.

Videos shared on social media showed cars toppled on top of each other, tree limbs falling on houses and cars, and debris strewn on the streets.

Authorities in the coastal city have not reported any injuries or deaths. A spokesman said officials deactivated emergency protocols on Sunday and were working on persistent problems.
