Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart reintroduced a bill to create a unique ZIP code for the town of Miami Lakes.

"For far too long, the residents of Miami Lakes have dealt with countless issues stemming from not having their own ZIP Code," said Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.

"From higher insurance premiums to election and census confusion, the lack of a unique ZIP Code has been a costly and burdensome problem for my constituents. I am proud to reintroduce this critical legislation that would create a unique ZIP Code for the town and finally address this long-standing problem once and for all, the congressman continued.

In 2016, Diaz-Balart introduced a bill to establish a dedicated ZIP code for Miami Lakes and other municipalities. While the bill passed in the U.S. House, it was considered in the Senate.

Diaz-Balart resumed his efforts to give Miami Lakes its own ZIP code in 2018. However, once again it passed the House but was not considered in the Senate. Similar legislations were introduced in 2019 and 2021 but were ultimately not considered in the House.

“I thank Senator Marco Rubio for introducing a similar bill in the Senate. I encourage my colleagues in the House and Senate to pass this legislation so that Miami Lakes residents are granted the relief they need,” he added.

Miami Lakes has sought to have its own ZIP code for almost ten years, claiming that it has caused residents with higher insurance rates and confusion on Election Day. The town’s ZIP code also covers parts of Hialeah and Miami Gardens.

"We've been working hand-in-hand with Congressman Mario Diaz Balart to move the issue of obtaining an independent Miami Lakes Zip Code forward," said Mayor Manny Cid. "Thanks to the Congressman's efforts, we are closer today than ever before. I'm hopeful and optimistic that our efforts will be successful in providing much needed auto insurance relief for Miami Lakers."
