Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) will include pay raises, bonuses, and incentives for law enforcement officers in his state budget proposal, he said during a press conference on Monday in Orlando.

DeSantis is proposing to give $1,000 bonuses to law enforcement officers, firefighters, and medical emergency technicians, similar to the bonuses they received this year.

He is also asking for a $73 million fund to increase the minimum salary of new law enforcement officers by 20 percent and  experienced officers by 25 percent.

“Increasing salaries … is going to make a real difference for those officers. It will make a real difference for the families. It will help retain a lot of the talented people we have as well as recruit new people,” he said.

His proposal will be reviewed during the next Florida Legislative Session in 2022, where it will be up for approval. The Florida Senate is dominated by Republicans, so it is likely that the Governor's new proposals will pass.
