Commemoration of Sept. 11 anniversary begins in South Florida

Events are taking place across South Florida this Wednesday to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001

Events are taking place across South Florida this Wednesday to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The following is a list of events that are taking place from 8:30 a.m. in Miami-Dade and Broward counties, according to Local 10:

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

Miami Beach (8:30 a.m.): Emergency response teams from the city of Miami Beach fire and police departments began a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at Fire Station 2, located at 2300 Pine Tree Drive. A moment of silence was held at 8:46 a.m. as firefighters lowered the American flag to half-staff.

Southwest Miami-Dade (10:00 a.m.): The Miami-Dade police and fire departments, along with the US Southern Command, attended a ceremony at Tropical Park, located at 7900 SW 40th St ., in memory of the agents, firefighters and military personnel who lost their lives in the attacks.

BROWARD COUNTY

Davie (7:00 a.m.): The Broward College Public Safety Institute held a ceremony at the college's central campus, located at 3501 Davie Rd. (buildings 21 and 22), to honor the lives lost in the terrorist attacks.

Miramar (8:15 a.m.): The city held a 9/11 veterans memorial event at Miramar Regional Park, located at 16801 Miramar Parkway. FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey B. Veltri, who heads the FBI's Miami field office, was the speaker at the event.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (8:30 a.m.): The Broward County Aviation Department hosted a ceremony to celebrate Patriot Day. The “FLL Will Never Forget” commemoration is an unofficial holiday in honor of the victims of the attacks. The 9/11 ceremony was held at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and was attended by several public figures, including Broward County Mayor Nan Rich; County Administrator Monica Cepero; FLL CEO and Chief Aviation Officer Mark E. Gale; the federal security director of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Jason Martin; U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Deputy Port Director Stephen Balog; and Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony.

Fort Lauderdale (9:00 a.m.): The city and the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum held a 9/11 commemoration ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale Fire and Safety Museum, located at 1022 West Las Olas Boulevard.

Weston (11:00 a.m.): The Palace at Weston hosted a special event at The Palace at Weston – Memory Care Community, located at 16025 Emerald Estates Drive, in honor of Edwin Jorge, a 9/11 survivor and former regional manager of the New York Peace Corps Office. Jorge was in Building 6 of the World Trade Center when it was destroyed by the collapse of the North Tower.

Pompano Beach (6:00 p.m.): The City of Pompano Beach Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, the Broward Sheriff's Office and the Pompano Beach Historical Society, invited the public to one night at Founders Park, located at 215 NE Fourth St, to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks.

Pembroke Pines (8:30 a.m.): The city held an event at Charles F. Dodge City Center Memorial Park, located at 601 City Center Way, to honor the nearly 3,000 victims of the 9/11 attacks, those thousands of injured and rescuers who put their lives at risk.
