U.S. authorities report that the Prime Minister of the British Virgin Islands, Andrew Arturo Fahie, was arrested for alleged drug trafficking in Miami, along with his port director Oleanvine Maynard.
The arrest took place at the Opa-locka Executive Airport. Both men are being charged with criminal association to import cocaine and money laundering.
According to court documents, the arrest comes after the defendants allegedly went to meet with Mexican drug traffickers from the Sinaloa Cartel, who were undercover federal agents.
In addition to Fahie and Maynard, the same charges have been given to Maynard's son, Kadeem Maynard.
According to the investigation, the defendants expected to receive $700,000 to help smuggle cocaine into Miami and New York from Colombia, smuggling the drugs through the port in Tortola.
In the Virgin Islands, the prime minister is the elected head of government, while the governor is appointed by the British queen.
