Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky received a standing ovation and left his translator in shock when he spoke about freedom in Ukraine as he addressed the European Parliament on Tuesday.

"We are only fighting for our land and our freedom," Zelensky said, causing the English interpreter to choke with emotion. "We have a desire to see our children alive. I think it's only fair."

The Ukrainian leader said that all Ukrainian squares would soon be called "Freedom Square," and condemned Russian attacks in Kharkiv.

"Every square after today, no matter what it is called, will be called 'Freedom Square,' in every city in our country," he said.

"We are fighting to be equal members of Europe. I think today we are showing everyone that that is exactly what we are," Zelensky added.

The president's speech came a day after he signed an application for Ukraine to join the European Union. When he finished his speech, he received a standing ovation from members of the parliament.
