Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is in serious condition after being shot several times this Wednesday, according to the politician's social networks. Everything happened after a government meeting, sources confirmed.

“He has been shot multiple times and his life is currently in danger,” says Fico’s Facebook account, which indicates that he was taken by helicopter to the town of Banská Bystrica, about 65 kilometers from Handlová, where the incident occurred.

The politician has injuries to his abdomen, legs and arms, according to the newspaper Denník N.

A spokesman for the Slovak Interior Ministry described the shooting of the country's prime minister as “an assassination attempt.”

The political leader, 59, is at “risk of death,” a statement from the government office also said, according to Reuters.

Fico was injured after a man shot him at least four times.

The shocking events took place in front of the House of Culture, in the city of Handlova, about 150 kilometers northeast of the capital, after a government meeting.

Police cordoned off the scene minutes after the incident.

Lubos Blaha, vice president of parliament confirmed the attack during a session of the legislature, which was postponed until further notice, the Slovak news agency TASR reported.

After the shooting of the Slovak prime minister, one person was arrested, although he has not been identified so far. No opposition group has taken credit for the event, which could put an end to the president’s life.
