British law enforcement authorities said Monday they had charged actor Kevin Spacey with four counts of sexual assault against three men.

The charges stem from historic allegations of sexual offenses that purportedly occurred between 2005 and 2013.

The charges were authorized by the Crown Prosecution Service last month.

“Kevin Spacey Fowler, 62 (26.07.59), has been formally charged today (Monday, 13 June) with four counts of sexual assault against three men,” British Metropolitan Police said in a statement. “He has also been charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

The ‘L.A. Confidential’ star is due to appear in the Royal Courts on Thursday.

“Kevin Spacey Fowler, 62, has been formally charged today with four counts of sexual assault against three men. He has also been charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent,” London’s Metropolitan Police said.

“He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court at 10am on Thursday, 16 June,” the statement reads.

British authorities said last month they approved the indictments against Spacey, which in England, only took effect after the actor returned to England to be formally charged.

Spacey denied the charges on a recent appearance of ABC News’s “Good Morning America” and vowed to return to England to clear his name.

“While I am disappointed with their decision to move forward, I will voluntarily appear in the U.K. as soon as can be arranged and defend myself against these charges, which I am confident will prove my innocence,” he said in a statement to the television morning show.

The British charges outlined in the press release are connected to alleged incidents taking place in London and Gloucestershire. They date from the time period when Spacey was the artistic director of the Old Vic theater in London, a playhouse he ran from 2003 to 2015.

“The first person to publicly accuse Mr. Spacey, a two-time Academy Award winner, of sexual misconduct was the actor Anthony Rapp, who said in 2017 that Mr. Spacey made unwanted sexual advances toward him at a New York party in 1986, when he was 14 years old, the New York Times reported.”

“Soon after Mr. Rapp’s allegations appeared in an article published by BuzzFeed, multiple men who worked with Mr. Spacey at the Old Vic also accused him of inappropriate behavior. An independent investigation, commissioned by the theater, said that Mr. Spacey’s “stardom and status” might have stopped people from raising accusations when they occurred. The investigators’ report added that they could not independently verify the allegations, and Mr. Spacey did not participate,” the newspaper said on Monday.

Spacey is scheduled to appear at 10:00 London Time on June 16.
