The police portrait of David Bowie, which was taken after he received a drug charge along with Iggy Pop in 1976, will go to auction.

The mugshot is of a police station in Rochester, New York, where the musicians were processed and held for a few hours after the arrest. The two musicians were detained after a performance in the area where police confiscated "about half a pound" of marijuana.

The photo came up for auction on July 15 and, according to the listing, came from "the husband of the seller's cousin... a gentleman named Scott" who "was the officer who fingerprinted and photographed David Bowie."

Apparently, the officer gave the seller the original Kodak photo as a wedding gift, as he knew he was a Bowie fan. The seller has been in possession of the photo for "46 years and has kept it safely hidden."

The listing has an estimated photo value of around $1,000 to $1,500 but it's hard to know how high the price will be after Bowie fans get the live bid. More information about the auction here.

In other Bowie news, the imminent release date for the documentary "Moonage Daydream" was revealed earlier this week. The encompassing film will be released worldwide on September 16 and is described as a "feature-length cinematic odyssey" that "explores Bowie's creative, musical and spiritual journey." Brett Morgen has taken over directing duties, while the film has been sanctioned by the late icon's heirs.
