Spanish President Pedro Sánchez welcomed the Venezuelan president-elect Edmundo González at the Moncloa Palace this Thursday amid strong tensions between both countries amid dictator Nicolas Maduro’s refusal to relinquish power.

After the meeting, González reported that he had a “very pleasant and interesting conversation” with Sánchez, whom he thanked “for his willingness to receive me and my wife in Spain.”

“At the same time, I expressed our recognition for your interest in working for the recovery of democracy and respect for human rights in our country. Likewise, I ratified my determination to continue the fight to enforce the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people expressed on July 28 by more than 7 million voters,” González wrote in his official X account.

For his part, Sánchez reported the meeting in a message on the X social media platform in which he gave “a warm welcome” to González, “whom we welcome showing Spain's humanitarian commitment and solidarity with Venezuelans.”

“Spain continues to work in favor of democracy, dialogue and the fundamental rights of the brother people of Venezuela,” he said.

The meeting between the two presidents took place in the midst of strong tensions between the Spanish government and the regime of Nicolás Maduro after González was welcomed by the Motherland.

The president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, proposed to the Venezuelan Executive to break relations with Spain, after the Spanish Congress of Deputies approved recognizing González Urrutia as elected president.

The 177 votes in favor came from the right and nationalist groups, such as the Basque National Party, usual allies of the socialists, who have remained in the minority with their left-wing partners.

The conservative Popular Party (PP) managed to advance this Wednesday another non-law proposal that urges the entire Spanish government to recognize González Urrutia as the winner of the Venezuelan elections on July 28 and demand that the Nicolás Maduro regime “immediately cease the repression.”

The initiative also asks, among other things, to promote the “reinstatement” of sanctions on the leaders of the Venezuelan regime or to support the appearance of the Carter Center to detail its conclusions on the elections.
