Chinese Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu was involved in a terrible accident at the first corner of the British Grand Prix when his car overturned and crashed into the safety barriers. The 23-year-old collided with Mercedes Briton George Russell at the start of the race and the Chinese star's car overturned, creating the most terrifying image of the weekend at the Silverstone circuit. Fortunately, Zhou is out of danger.

The Chinese driver's Alfa Romeo ended up in the gravel, where his car overturned again before crashing into the fence after skidding for 200 meters. Russell instantly jumped out of his car to help his teammate, who was eventually treated by medical assistance.

A red flag was immediately called for after the mass crash that ensued, with Alex Albon also involved in the incident that knocked him out of the race after colliding with Sebastian Vettel. Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda's Alpha Tauri suffered severe damage after being hit by Albon after he spun into the wall. Alpine's Esteban Ocon was also involved in the collision but remained in the race.

Red Bull's world champion Max Verstappen suffered damage to his bodywork from the wreckage of the cars that remained on the track. With the leader out of action, the win went to Ferrari's Spaniard Carlos Sainz, his first victory in Formula 1.

Fortunately, Zhou Guanyu was not seriously injured in the accident, and Alfa Romeo stated that he is okay via his Twitter profile. Guanyu was removed from the car, immediately placed on a stretcher, and sent to the circuit's medical center, where he was declared fit and released.

The accident occurred after Russell was hit in the rear of his Mercedes, and his tire subsequently struck Zhou. His vehicle flew spectacularly and skidded into the barriers at a frightening speed. He was then catapulted over the tire barrier as he crashed into the fence. Undoubtedly, his halo in the engineering of the single-seater prevented serious injury or even death.

It is the second time the halo has potentially helped to avoid a fatal incident following Sunday morning's F2 race. Dennis Hauger's car went airborne after connecting with a curb on the second lap. It then flew into Roy Nissany, and the Israeli driver appeared to miraculously avoid injury despite the collision.
