A kayaker in Hawaii captured on video the terrifying moment a massive shark tried to take a bite of a fisherman's kayak last Friday in Hawaii.
Scott Haraguchi was fishing in his kayak about a mile offshore from Kualoa in Windward Oahu when he heard a “whooshing sound” and saw a “wide brown thing” near his kayak.
Despite originally thinking it was a turtle, he quickly realized it was a shark. Immediately he took his left foot out of the water, which he had dangling outside of the kayak.
The shark charges toward the kayak, crashes into it, and attempts to bite it, shaking the entire boat. Eventually, the shark lets go of the kayak after the fisherman kicks it in the head and swims away, but not before giving Haraguchi the scare of a lifetime.
“A tiger shark rammed me! Holy f—!” Haraguchi can be heard saying in the video as the kayak continues to rock.
Haraguchi had accidentally left his GoPro turned on after catching a fish. Never did he expect that it would capture the horrifying attack. The video of the attack was shared on social media and has gained hundreds of thousands of views since.
“[It] happened so fast. [I] didn’t realize I took my left foot out of the water to brace myself from impact and actually pushed the shark’s head off with it,” Haraguchi said of the attack. “If you asked me to do that again, even without the shark, I don’t think I’d have that flexibility.”
After reviewing the video, the fisherman said he was surprised at how close the encounter was. Haraguchi said the shark left its teeth marks on his kayak.
"I am thinking that the shark actually disabled and wounded the seal, let it die or was waiting for it to die, came back and thought I was the seal, and attacked me instead," he said.
“I realize that life is short, time is short on earth,” he said after the attack. “Make the most of it, be nice to people.”
