A man’s body was found in the lake outside the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers on Wednesday morning after he allegedly trespassed and jumped into the lake.

The 45-year-old man allegedly trespassed at the SoFi Stadium at around 6 a.m. by jumping over a fence into the parking lot. Then, he headed to the 15-foot-deep lake in the property. The man got into the water to swim but never resurfaced, according to Inglewood Mayor James Butts.

Stadium security guards noticed the man on surveillance footage and alerted the police about the intruder. However, when the police arrived, it was too late. So their mission became to retrieve the man’s body.

The man’s body was recovered from the lake by divers and sonar more than three hours after he initially got in, at 9:48 a.m.

The man has not yet been identified.

Authorities do not know what caused the man to trespass or why he went into the water, Butts added.

Butts added that he didn’t believe there was anything that the stadium staff could have done to prevent the tragedy.

“This is someone who made a conscious decision to trespass onto the property, get into the lake and he ended up having some distress and difficulty so I don’t think that SoFi could have done to prevent this,” Butts said
