House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced plans to run for re-election, but she has previously said she would step down from her position as Speaker of the House in 2022.

The California Democrat, who has spent more than three decades in office, announced her re-election campaign in a video.

"While we have made progress much more needs to be done to improve people’s lives. This election is crucial: nothing less is at stake than our Democracy," the Speaker posted on Twitter.

In 2018, Pelosi stated she planned to step down from her leadership position in 2022.

Rumors have swirled for months that Pelosi plans on retiring at the end of this term.

It remains unclear whether she plans keeping her position as speaker if Democrats maintain the majority in Congress this fall.
