Elon Musk painted over the “w” in the Twitter sign outside the company’s San Francisco headquarters on Monday, changing the word to “Titter” after the building’s landlord said the company was legally required to keep “Twitter” on its sign.
“Our landlord at SF HQ says we’re legally required to keep the sign as Twitter & cannot remove ‘w’, so we painted it the background color. Problem solved!” Musk, Twitter’s CEO, posted on Sunday.
“They tried to muffle our titter,” Musk posted in a subsequent tweet.

Several Twitter users posted pictures of Twitter’s sign at the headquarters with the “w” painted over in white to blend in with the background.
William LeGate, an entrepreneur, tweeted a picture of the new sign on Thursday. "Elon Musk, in a remarkable show of maturity, has removed the W from Twitter's logo outside their San Francisco HQ," LeGate's post said.

Musk bought the social media company last fall for $44 billion. He has made drastic changes to the company’s headquarters since he took over. In January, he tried to auction off hundreds of things from Twitter’s offices, including kitchenware, sculptures, and office supplies, in order to get extra cash flow.
The change in the sign is the latest disagreement between the Twitter CEO and the building’s landlord. Last January, the building’s landlord, SRI Nine Market Square LLC, sued Twitter, accusing it of owing around $3.4 million in rent.
Last year, Musk polled his Twitter followers on whether he should change the social media’s company name to “Titter.” Such a move, however, according to the landlord, the company is legally required to keep “Twitter” on its sign.
Along with the change in the sign, Musk also changed the name in his Twitter profile to “Harry Bōlz.” He also replaced Twitter’s iconic bird logo with a picture of the meme of Shiba Inu—representing the cryptocurrency that he supports, dogecoin.
