A 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay Area on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake struck at around 11:42 a.m. PT and was centered at Seven Trees, about 12.1 miles east of San Jose. The earthquake was followed by a 3.1 magnitude aftershock at 11:47 a.m. and a 3.6 aftershock at 3:08 p.m.

Around 100,000 people in the area received an advanced notification of the quake via the Earthquake Warning California app, the state’s earning system, according to Brian Ferguson, deputy director for crisis communication and public affairs for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.

“Advance notice varied from two seconds for those very near the epicenter to 18 seconds for those in San Francisco,” Ferguson said.

There are no reports of damage or injuries, or even emergency calls, according to emergency services.

According to USGS seismologist Annemarie Baltay, “there could be 10-15 aftershocks of magnitude 3 or greater in the next week.”

“Aftershocks of this magnitude and duration are totally normal for an event of this type,” she said. “If you do feel shaking don’t forget to drop, cover and hold on.”

The 5.1 earthquake marked the largest tremor in the Bay Area since 2014, when a 6.0 magnitude earthquake was reported in Napa.
