Jair Bolsonaro has applied for a six-month tourist visa to remain in the United States, his lawyers said on Monday, an indication the former Brazilian president does not plan to return to his home country soon.

His lawyer, Felipe Alexandre, said that the U.S. government received the application on Friday and Bolsonaro will stay in the country while the application is being reviewed, a process that can take several months.

"He would like to take some time off, clear his head, and enjoy being a tourist in the United States for a few months before deciding what his next step will be," Alexandre said in an email response to Reuters.

"Whether or not he will use the full six months will be up to him and whatever strategy we agree to embark on based on his plans as they develop," Alexandre added.

Bolsonaro left Brazil with his family two days before his term ended on January 1 and was succeeded by leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He has been staying at the Florida home of former mixed martial arts fighter, Jose Aldo.

He originally arrived traveling on an A-1 visa, which is reserved for diplomats and heads of state. However, it expired the day he left office.

The former president is facing multiple investigations in Brazil, including alleged wrongdoings during his term as president and his role in the insurrection that took place earlier this month, when Bolsonaro supporters stormed Brazil’s Congress, Supreme Court, and presidential palace, according to the Financial Times
