New images emerged of the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday while he was giving a speech in the western city of Nara.

A disturbing video released on Twitter shows the moment Shinzo Abe was shot as he was speaking to the public ahead of Sunday's election for the upper house of parliament.

The images show a first shot that apparently left no casualties, but the second shot hit the former prime minister and knocked him down.

Security forces immediately detained the suspect at the scene at around 11:30 a.m.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said police tackled and arrested him at the scene of the shooting.

Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, of Nara city, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said, according to NHK. A weapon confiscated at the scene appeared to be homemade, authorities added.

Abe was reportedly bleeding from the chest and unconscious when he was rushed to the hospital. He died hours after the attack.

More information about the murder suspect

The suspect lived in Nara, the city where the attack occurred.

Tetsuya worked for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force for three years until 2005, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported, citing Defense Ministry sources.

During his time there, Tetsuya received training with real firearms, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.

Japanese police found explosive-like items at Tetsuya's home in Nara.

During an interrogation at the Nara-nishi police station, Tetsuya told police that he "was not satisfied with former Prime Minister Abe's work and aimed to kill him," but that the attack "was not because of the former prime minister's political leanings," NHK reported.
