New Jersey Army veteran killed in collision with stolen SUV, allegedly driven by 14-year old

A 49-year-old New Jersey man was killed Tuesday in a head-on collision in upstate New York by a stolen SUV driven by a 14-year-old, authorities said.

Jonathan A. Keich, an U.S. Army veteran who lives in the Fords section of Woodbridge, New Jersey was headed north on Route 9 near Closs Drive in Rhinebeck, New York at about 6:25 a.m. when he was suddenly, allegedly struck by an underaged driver driving southbound in a stolen SUV, according to CBSNews.com.

While Keich, was pronounced dead at the scene, the 14-year old driver who allegedly struck hi was arrested and transported to an area hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. He will be transported to a New York juvenile detention facility upon his recovery, officials said.

Neither vehicle had any passengers and Keich and the 14-year old were deemed to be the only individuals in each of their vehicles.

The stolen SUV was reportedly a Toyota 4Runner.

Police said they suspect the 14-year old stole the SUV as part of an organized vehicle theft ring that previously operated out of Connecticut.

They are currently investigating whether the stolen Toyota was one of several vehicles stolen in northern Dutchess County and Connecticut late Monday and early Tuesday.
