FBI investigates explosion at New York border bridge

The City of Niagara Falls said the explosion involved an automobile attempting to enter the United States

Federal agents with the FBI are investigating an automobile explosion Wednesday at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, New York. The Bureau’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) is also closely surveilling all points of entry to the state.

The blast and subsequent fire at the border checkpoint happened just before high noon.

Federal authorities closed all four international border crossings between the U.S. and Canada in Western New York were shut down after the blast, according to WIVB-TV, a CBS affiliate in Buffalo.

The City of Niagara Falls said the explosion involved an automobile attempting to enter the United States.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was briefed and is discussing developments with law enforcement agents in Buffalo.

“At my direction, the New York State Police is actively working with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force to monitor all points of entry to New York,” Hochul said in a statement.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, and no suspects have been identified as of 2 p.m. EST.
